Special Needs > An introduction to pre-school education

Your child’s early years are an important time for their development. But what if you are worried that your child may be having difficulties before they go to school?

Your child learns through being with other people and exploring the world around them. But your child’s development may be at risk because of difficulties with:

  • communication
  • understanding and learning
  • sensory and physical development

Your child’s special educational needs should be identified and assessed as early as possible. Your doctor, health visitor or nursery school teacher are well placed to recognise the needs of a child who may be having difficulties.

If you think your child may have a special educational need that has not been identified you should talk to the person in pre-school who has a particular responsibility for special educational needs. Or you should speak to your doctor or health visitor.

Most local authorities have a well-established network of services for the under fives. Health authorities, voluntary organisations and social services work closely together to support children with special educational needs.
