Special Needs > Early years support

A number of schemes have been put in place by the Government to support families and young children.

In most local authorities there is a network of services for pre-school children where both education and health authorities, social services and voluntary organisations work together.

Getting hold of the right information is important. This could be about:

  • the full range of government services available locally and how to access them
  • the support available from local parents groups and voluntary organisations
  • there are also schemes that 'join up' the people who you come in contact with in supporting you and your child

Sure Start
Sure Start is for children, parents and communities and brings together free early education and better childcare.

For children with special educational needs and those with disabilities, families and professionals will work together to:

  • define the nature of your child’s needs and the impact on your family
  • look at the support needed and agree the type of the equipment, medical care, therapy, information and practical advice you may need
  • agree how, where, when support will be provided to you
