Dads and Male Carers > Dads are Welcome > The Aim

This new approach to dads is in recognition that childbirth isn’t just about mothers and babies, but about families, of which dads play an important part.

A new baby brings changes to the lives of both parents. We hope, that by including dads more in all aspects of maternity care, we are helping new families to get off to a more confident and positive start.

We aim to be as flexible as possible in the inclusion of dads in the antenatal period, during the birth and in the postnatal period.

We acknowledge that not all dads wish to be present for all aspects of care and/or the delivery of the baby and we respect your individual decision. We also acknowledge that not all women may want their partners with them all the time.

This new approach to care is specifically for dads and is not intended to include any other family members, due mainly to the restricted amount of facilities that we can offer, but also to the respect and security which must be shown to other patients and staff.

However, in circumstances, where dads are unable to be present, one other nominated person may take his place. There may be occasions when it is not appropriate for a support person to be present all the time. This will be at the discretion of the midwife on duty and we ask that you respect the decision that is made.
